Rise of the Jack O"Lanterns - Old Westbury Gardens
Through October 29, 2018 - Old Westbury
See iconic multi-pumpkin structures that consist of dozens of illuminated jack o"lanterns assembled into life-sized pieces of art. You"ll see classic fan-favorites like our giant 40-foot long dragon and our life sized fire truck. Our skeletal biker gang will be back rumbling down the garden roads on their hogs, but this year, there"s a new gang of off-road riders in town and they"re ready to battle for turf. For the first time ever, we"re bringing a few of our jack o"lanterns to life in a brand new way! We"ll have three new jack o"lantern characters on the trail who actually talk! They"ll be around to tell you some ghostly stories, sing you some songs, get you to laugh, and make you wonder how we bring them to life!
See over FIVE DOZEN intricately carved 100+ pound pumpkins on display! These ephemeral works of art are meticulously hand-painted and hand-carved by dozens of artists who put upwards of 20 hours of work into each pumpkin to make them perfect for your enjoyment! The RISE is the only event in the country which carves 5,000 fresh REAL pumpkins EACH WEEKEND! For you jack o"lantern mathletes out there, that"s a total of 20,000 jack o"lanterns carved from fresh real pumpkins over the course of 4 weekends! Each one weighs about 20 pounds so that"s about 400,000 pounds of pumpkins (200 tons) we"ll go through during the month! It takes about 75 people, over a two-day period each week, to carve and place all 5,000 and then remove them all on Monday morning! Yes, we do have a few hundred carveable artificial pumpkins in our display, because some of our carvers prefer them, but those are in addition to the 5,000 jack o"lanterns carved from fresh real pumpkins each week!
We"re bringing in some of the top pumpkin sculptors in the country to carve a dozen of the most jaw-dropping externally carved pumpkin sculptures you"ll ever see! You"ll find them along the trail submerged in a super-secret-solution so they"ll be preserved for the entire month of October! Want to see some of our carvers in action? Check out our live carving demonstrations going on in the main tent when you arrive or before you leave. We"ll have a few of our top jack o"lantern artists carving live and answering your carving questions so you can take that knowledge home and make your doorstep jacks the envy of the neighborhood.
The trail at RISE of the Jack O"Lanterns is well lit and well staffed to ensure that the experience is always safe and enjoyable for visitors of all ages. Come visit us and enjoy a unique, family-friendly experience that lasts a lifetime! Advanced Tickets Required. Most dates/times sell out so order early for the best chance of getting your preferred ticket time.

Each week the teens and their coach will explore a different area of focus and participate in various activities and conversations: Week 1: Self-awareness: build self-awareness to better understand who you are and what makes you tick, so you can more easily fine-tune your clock. Week2: Oh, Shift!: use your words to create your reality in school, your personal life, and relationships. This one is a game-changer! Week 3: Flow: practice acceptance of yourself, your circumstances, and other people so you spend less time in resistance and more time in the state of peace and productivity. Week 4: Change: discover why creating positive change is difficult, even when you really want it. Change isn’t easy, but understanding what keeps you stuck is so helpful. Week 5: Reactions: recognize that things don’t happen to you, things just happen. But it’s how you react to those things that gives you the control you yearn for. Week 6: Personal Power: understand that you are not a victim of other people, events, the system, or fate. But instead you can choose to be a victor by holding yourself accountable for your feelings, actions, and choices. Participants will be provided all course material. A deposit of $150 is required to reserve your spot. If the participant completes the entire 6-week program, we will refund your deposit. (TSVF will pay for the course). The Sophia Valsamos Foundation is proud to sponsor this special youth empowerment program. We know that your teen and their family and friends will ultimately benefit from the lessons they learn in this program.

True Colors- Exhibition - Nassau County Museum of Art
Through December 30, 2018 - Roslyn Harbor
Nothing in art is more powerful than color. From Matisse to Mark Rothko and Frank Stella, and onward to the huge Color Field canvases and pulsing neon sculptures of today, color as a means of expression is the keynote for this wildly exuberant show. Potent even to the point of being considered dangerous, it is the most exciting element of art, the strongest tool in the toolbox. “Color, above all, is a means of liberation,” Matisse declared.
The full range of color’s magic is on display in this exuberant show of over 100 works from the nineteenth century to this moment’s hottest talents. The roll call is a hit parade of art history’s most exciting names: Kandinsky, Motherwell, Warhol, Wolf Kahn, James Nares, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, David Hockney, and many more. It all begins with a monumental painting by Titian, considered the original champion of color in art, in a dramatic installation.
